I apologise for the radio silence for the last couple of weeks, but I've been up in Scotland for my summer holidays and first and foremost to attend the wedding of my good friends Fiona and Tom.

They asked me to produce a design for a tote bag which was given out as favours at the wedding so I decided to create a factual diagram just for them. It was so much fun remembering all the stories and getting lots of secret intelligence from the Mrs Leighton and Mrs Hepburn. I will post pics of the actual bag later in the week.

I am delighted to say my prints have gone international. I took them to the pharmacy and had a passport photo taken against a grey background with strictly no smiling and packaged them up in a tube and sent them all the way to a world of vegemite, Ned Kelly and uranium. I have been posting work in progress images from this project for a some time. I was commissioned by University College Hospital London to design ceiling tiles for some of the childrens wards. The majority of the designs fulfilled the interactive part of the brief and the serene landscape design (pictured below) will go above beds where longer procedures are taking place. i was saddened to see the space shuttle taking off for its final mission yesterday. below is an image from the cover of a 1978 russian childrens book featured on the blog dreams of space. in the good old days there seemed to be so much optimism and excitement about space exploration which has now dissipated. lets hope the brian cox effect will generate some more funding. (i'm referring to his enthusiasm for astronomy, not his glorious barnet or mastery on the keys)

yesterday was a day of discovery. i saw more shows in one day than i have seen in the last few months, i'm ashamed to say. i started off with joan miro and taryn simon at tate modern. then after a thorough drenching i dropped into the hayward gallery to see the tracey emin. after a quick trip home to dry off and smarten up i headed back to covent garden for the charming baker private view at mercer street studios.

i think they could fit with the adage 'something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.' i won't spoil it and reveal the associations...you decide!

i have just got back from a day in the countryside dropping off some work for an exhibition in oxfordshire. i have some prints in an exhibition entitled bright at forge 2 in culworth, oxfordshire. its a cool little gallery located in an old forge filled with lots of lovely things to look at. it was a typically english summers day which involved dodging vicious chickens, exploring a castle ruin (well a mound of grass with a moat as the castle has long gone) and counting bees with the constant threat of rain.

extraordinary embroidery

i took another course at the make lounge this week. i think i'm addicted and there's going to have to be some kind of intervention. i fancied learning some embroidery skills and wasn't disappointed by the course. there was the usual friendly but purposefully speedy atmosphere to make sure the indecisive's like me keep up! we could choose from any set of iron on transfers in the shop and i was spoilt for choice again. i decided to use one from the artist series, which had been designed by julie west. thanks to her for the cute weather inspired patterns.

my favourite part was deciding on the colours and stitches to use to fill the pattern. it shows how a shop bought pattern can be personalised and the different interpretations were really interesting to see. hopefully i'll finish my embroidery sometime in this millneium, so i'll post pics when its completed.

i've been busy working on a commission for the last few months and have been posting work in progress updates of the line drawings. i start off by drawing all of the objects/letters/numbers by hand and then drawing the lines to make them obscured, scan them in and then for the fun bit...colouring in! the piece below has 16 objects, hope you can find them all!

i was delighted to be asked to design a wedding invitation for my friends lucy and steph. i thought of all the usual things...flowers/horse shoes etc and then they told me the ceremony is taking place at a lion sanctuary and the guests are travelling to the reception on a routemaster bus which inspired my design. then i got down to the nitty gritty of screeprinting 100 invites and turned my living room into a print studio for a few days.

this week is the original print fair at the royal academy and i am displaying with jealous gallery. i am also proud to say a factual diagram of love and marriage is being displayed in the window of ciro pearls in the historical burlington arcad e. here's the blurb...

last night me and my good friend fiona 'speedy gonzalez' hepburn did a patchwork course at the make lounge in islington. she really knows how to burn it up on the sewing machine! this is the second course i've taken at the make lounge and again i was really impressed. its such a great feeling to learn a new skill and all in one evening, even though i was a bit of a zombie when i got home! its a real treat to have everything laid out for you and lots of space to work in a friendly relaxed environment, with some good old motivational tunes on the ipod to keep you going. That's before i even think about the fact that you don't have tidy up all those tiny bit of thread and the yummy sample treats from the cupcake decorating course. what next...?!

i love the parks in london and haven't really had a chance to explore regent's park, so oran and i took a big looping walk around it today. we saw a myriad of wildfowl on the boating lake, illegally looked at pair of camels (over the fence of london zoo) and found some beautiful blossom. the unseasonably warm weather made it a perfect day for our explorations. a great antidote to the post-holiday blues.

alien nation: the art of blending in opens tomorrow. the guest list for the private view is now full so if your names not down you're not coming in. but the show opens to the public on wednesday 16th march so if you happen to be lurking around under the west way please pop in.

i was just looking through some files and found the work in progress images from my featured print a factual diagram of london. i did the drawing during the hot couple of weeks last summer and that feels like a lifetime ago now. when the piece was printed last week i was delighted to reread the facts and quotes.

below is the digital mock up of my new print blackboard alphabet. i'm really pleased with how its turned out and am excited to see it as a screen print very soon. i really enjoyed doing the drawings, it took me straight back to my childhood.

its so inspirational to be surrounded by the beautiful childrens books, puzzles and flash cards that are around these days. then there's a flood of nostalgia when i read oran some of my old favourites...the tiger who came to tea, mog and baby, where's spot? and discover some classics like where the wild things are which i never encountered as a child. maybe mum thought i would be scared of the wild rumpus!

my new print kites will be shown in an exhibition entitled mending broken hearts at cambridge contemporary art from 4th-27th february.

the exhibition also showcases the mending broken hearts portfolio which is an limited edition set of screen prints produced by leading contemporary british artists, including art superstars sir peter blake and damien hirst. all publisher's profits from sales of the mending broken hearts portfolio will be donated to the british heart foundations research funds.

i've just designed a new screenprint and card for all the lovers out there. i was inspired by the work i did for my commission to use kites as the subject matter for a valentines print.

i hope you've had a great christmas and are looking forward to a spectacular new year celebration. i've been making the most of the limbo in between christmas and new year to put together some new pieces for a commission that i'm working on. i really like doing commissions as i discover lots of new techniques that i wouldn't otherwise have used. i was having some trouble with the kites piece below until i found the lasso tool on photoshop, then i was in my element! i'll post more images and information as it progresses.

uclh wellness print//digital mock up

in 2011 there is going to be a charity auction associated with the uclh wellness project. i have been working on my piece and after much deliberation and reworking i think its done. although the colour may well change when i get in the studio and print it. its intended to compliment the hoarding. the idea was that the repeat background was made up of medicinal herbs and for the print i did initially name all of the herbs and have them in a more traditional formation. but after a bit of advice from stupendously talented sister-in-law sarah bridgland, i decided to stick with the scatter approach. this is how i randomly laid the images out before using them to make the the repeat pattern and i like it. i'm exorcising the control freak in me!

its a little early, but i've already made my new years resolution. i'm going to learn a new skill in 2011. this year i learned how to crochet and after a very confused first lesson my brain switched onto it and now i'm hooked (excuse the pun)! forget going on a diet or vowing to become a gym bunny, these kind of resolutions will be broken before the decorations come down. pick up that crochet hook, learn to use your camera on manual setting or have a go at traditional printmaking the possibilities are endless!

i've made some crochet baubles for the bhvu xmas market which is today, saturday 4th december 12-6 and tomorrow, sunday 5th december 12-6. i'm sharing a stand with super talented printmakers adam bridgland, tom leighton and fiona hepburn. the stand will be manned by the boys today, but work commitments and illnesses allowing, we will all be there for some merriment tomorrow. please drop in anytime over the weekend if you're in the area.

happy 1st birthday oran

yesterday was my sons first birthday, so happy birthday oran! i can't believe a year has gone by already. it seems no time since we brought him home from hospital equally terrified and exhilarated!

i decided i wanted to make an alphabet and spent a long time deliberating about how it was going to look and assigning meanings to the letters. i decided to go for a screen print in the style of a blackboard and used things oran loves and places he's been during his first year for the wording. its been really fun to make and hopefully will be a nice keepsake for the future.

UCLH hoardings installed

yesterday the hoardings were installed at the site of uclh's new international cancer centre in huntley street w1. the artists made work in response to the theme of wellness and all of the artworks will be created into limited edition prints that will form part of the permanent art collection within the cancer centre once completed in 2011.

the other artists commissioned to make works are adam hayes, fiona hepburn, matthew green, andrew curtis, tom leighton, edd pearman, anthony burrill, sarah bridgland, jack kettlewell, abigail hunt and kieren reed, erica donovan, jess wilson and jane ward. i think the diversity of responses is really interesting and some great pieces have been produced. take a look if you're in the area. if you would like more information please contact guy noble, uclh arts curator.

i've just returned from an week long trip to beautiful florence. we we're blessed with amazing weather and some inspirational sights from our friends/tour guides. it feels like we've only just scratched the surface of the city and will be sure to head back in the near future. i've added some pictures to my flickr site. there was an overwhelming amount of things to see which i attempted to document with photographs. from inspirational signage, to classic tourist shots and lastly the downright bizarre image of dubya as a woman...in a graveyard.

whilst scouring my local charity shop for vintage plates for my mother in law i was delighted to stumble across these cute little blocks. its not often when you look inside that you're as pleased with by contents. but i loved the two tone bananas and for a bargain 50p. i'm still hunting for the plates though.

below is a full view of my artwork for the uclh wellness project and a detail image of the hand rendered wording. the repeat background is made up of drawings of plants which have medicinal properties. these include echinacea, fenugreek, slippery elm and many more.

the hoardings are due to be installed at the end of the month and the diversity of the pieces i've seen so far is fantastic. in real life this piece is going to be 2.3 x 1.7 metres so i can't wait to see it printed up in bigger than life size dimensions.

for the last 9 months its been very rare for me to take a photograph which doesn't have a baby in it. scrolling through my iphoto library is like looking at a real time flip book of a growing baby. so i decided to add this photo which i took at the east london printmakers fete. the lettering was painted in gold which gives a really punchy tone in the black and white image. i loved the angles, grids, aerial and satellite dish which reminded me of some prints i made last year.

my most recent print will be on sale for the first time at the elp fete tomorrow. with a bit of technical help from my husband, i have produced a limited edition print with a gocco for the first time. its an amazing little machine and make screen printing look sedentary. i will post an image of the finished print on sunday.

adam hayes//maps project

super talented illustrator and good friend, adam hayes, has been curating a really interesting map project. he has invited artists and illustrators to submit maps of somewhere they feel that they belong.

after much consideration i decided that i belong in the countryside. i grew up surrounded by acres of unspoilt land and spent most of my childhood roaming around in the great outdoors. i have always been fascinated by the abstract quality of aerial maps and particularly love the patchwork effect created by years of farming the same fields.

for my map, the great outdoors, i produced an abstracted view of a rural countryside. it has purposefully been made using generic shapes and an empty compass and map pins. my intention is for anybody to be able to customise the map by utilising the compass and pins and adding landmarks, roads and rivers.

check out the maps blog to see some innovative maps. there are some amazing interpretations of the theme and loads of diversity. great project adam, keep up the good work!

today we went for a family outing, with tag fine arts, to the grand auction of the elephant parade. i was slightly anxious about the idea of taking an 8 month old baby to a champagne brunch which involved lots of speeches that required complete silence from the audience. luckily oran was happily distracted by chewing my entrance pass. my husband, adam bridgland's, design was inspired by the birth of our son so it was great for oran to finally meet his elephant counterpart. he did seem slightly more impressed by the helium balloons, but hopefully in years to come he'll appreciate the sentiment!

the final auction is taking place online tomorrow, so if you fancy supporting a really good cause (and have enough space to house a life size baby elephant) check out the elephant parade website.

my name's lucy and i'm hooked...on crochet

i finished my crochet course at the make lounge last night and was amazed with what i managed to make with just a few hours in class and a little bit of homework. after the first week i brought home a pretty uneven looking sampler and last night i brought home something which you can actually use! it proves that even in my thirties and suffering from a pretty bad case of baby brain its still possible to learn a new skill. i haven't quite put together the floral brooch yet, so will put up a picture when i do. so many colours to choose from!

i've just started a course at the make lounge, in islington, and its great. there's a fantastic little shop full of super cool fabric, books and everything a crafter would need. i'm taking the crochet fashion accessories course with a friend. its a two part course and will finish next week. at first i found it really tricky, but after some practise (and a glass of wine) it all became much easier. i have to thank my friend who helped me translate what i was supposed to be doing, without her i would have been totally lost! i don't think the 5.15am start helped! i had to photograph my hands to help me remember how to hold the yarn, the tension part is really tricky. i'll post next week with my finished item...as long as i have time to do my homework!

i love the barbican. the concrete, glass and geranium mass of the exterior and the timeless feel when you go into the centre. i've also admired the beautiful shocking pink sign at the fruiterers for years.
